Thanksgiving Thoughts for the year 2011

I have always prayed and asked God to establish the works of our hands for we are but His maiden servants and mere humans bound by the limitations of our human nature weaknesses and sinful nature of our selves !

2011 came as quickly as the years before it which have come and gone, almost at a blink of an eye ! We did not anticipate this year to be such a "Happening" year, we did not set off to plan this year as a Busy year ! But someone obviously did have this in mind and was not reviewing all until the time has come to pass to do so !

As a company, I have much to thank God for :-

The continuous spiritual growth of our pioneer girls who have left us in the middle of this year for their studies. We know that they are in transition time from secondary school to university. They miss us, we miss them, but we rejoice in their continuous search for more of God in their lives !
We have witnessed a series of baptism and confirmation of our pioneer girls who are now ready to declare their faith in Christ. We were thankful for the baptism of Katherine Chang and also the confirmation of Jovie Voo Su Yiing and Amanda Chee. Note that all three of them were baptised and confirmed at different churches!
Our church base girls have grown up, each in their ways and timings. This is the joy we have in serving through Girls' Brigade, we get to share with their parents the joy of their growth !
Our school base GB clubs continue to grow and gave us more challenges, we now have GB Clubs at :-
a) SRJK (C) Lok Yuk Likas - 110 girls, 3 teachers
b) SRJK Lok Yuk Likas - 25 girls, 2 teachers
c) SM Lok Yuk Likas morning session - 39 girls, 1 teacher
d) SM Lok Yuk Likas afternoon session - 24 girls, 1 teacher

At the airport for a business trip, I settled down to wait for the boarding announcement at Gate 35. Then I heard the voice on the public address system saying, "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Delta Flight 570 will board from Gate 41."

So my family picked up our luggage and carried it over to Gate 41. Not ten minutes later the public address voice told us that Flight 570 would in fact be boarding from Gate 35.

So, again, we gathered our carry-on luggage and returned to the original gate. Just as we were settling down, the public address voice spoke again: "Thank you for participating in Delta's physical fitness program.

A businessman walked into a New York City bank and asked for the loan officer. He said he was going to Europe on business for two weeks and needed to borrow $5,000. The loan officer said the bank would need some security for such a loan.

The business man then handed over the keys to a Rolls Royce that was parked on the street in front of the bank. Everything checked out and the loan officer accepted the car as collateral for the loan. An employee then drove the Rolls into the bank's underground garage and parked it there.

Two weeks later the businessman returned, repaid the $5,000 and the interest which came to $15.41.

The loan officer said, "We do appreciate your business and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a bit puzzled. While you were away we checked and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is why you would bother to borrow $5,000?"

All Set For Brigade Anniversary Dinner on 29 August 2009

Yes, we are very excited ! Yes, we are ready ! The countdown has begun, the rehearsals have been done. The final practices are still on. The 2nd Kota Kinabalu Girls' and Boys' Brigade Companies Brigade Anniversary Dinner is just a few days away.

We have a special acquittance to grace our event as the Guest of Honour,
Rev Chong Fui Yung of BCCM English Kelombong.
She was our chaplain when she was the pastor of BCCM English Kota Kinabalu many years ago.

We are truly thankful to God that the organising committee comprising of mainly ex-girls and a few ex-boys have managed to sell 20 tables and raised a few sponsors for our event. With their dedicated help and resourceful ideas, we are able to organise the entire event in less than four months time.

I wasn't watching for you."

We were very polite, this stranger and I.
We went on our way and we said goodbye.

But at home a different story is told,
How we treat our loved ones, young and old.

Later that day, cooking the evening meal,
My son stood beside me very still.

When I turned, I nearly knocked him down.
"Move out of the way," I said with a frown.

He walked away, his little heart broken.
I didn't realize how harshly I'd spoken.

While I lay awake in bed,
God's still small voice came to me and said,

"While dealing with a stranger,
common courtesy you use,
but the family you love, you seem to abuse.

Go and look on the kitchen floor,
You'll find some flowers there by the door.

Those are the flowers he brought for you.
He picked them himself: pink, yellow and blue.

He stood very quietly not to spoil the surprise,
you never saw the tears that filled his little eyes."

By this time, I felt very small,
And now my tears began to fall.

I quietly went and knelt by his bed;
"Wake up, little one, wake up," I said.

"Are these the flowers you picked for me?"
He smiled, "I found 'em, out by the tree.

I picked 'em because they're pretty like you.
I knew you'd like 'em, especially the blue."

I said, "Son, I'm very sorry for the way I acted today;
I shouldn't have yelled at you that way."

FAMILY
Are you aware that if we died tomorrow, the company
that we are working for could easily replace us in
a matter of days.

在一場船難中，唯一的生存者隨著潮水，
漂流到了一座無人島上。
The only survivor of a shipwreck
was washed up on a small, uninhabited island.

他天天激動地祈禱神救他能夠早日離開此處，回到家鄉。
他還每天注視著海上有否可搭救他的人，
但卻是除了汪洋一片，什麼也沒有。
He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him,
and every day he scanned the horizon for help,
but none seemed forthcoming.

後來，他決定用那片帶他到小島的木頭造一個簡陋的小木屋
以保護他在這險惡的環境中生存，並且保存他所有剩下的東西。
Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut
out of driftwood to protect him from the elements,
and to store his few possessions.

但有一天，在他捕完食物後，準備回小屋時，
突然發現他的小屋竟然陷在熊熊烈火之中，
大火引起的濃煙不斷向天上竄。
But then one day, after scavenging for food,
he arrived home to find his little hut in flames,
the smoke rolling up to the sky.

The worst had happened; everything was lost.
He was stunned with grief and anger.
"God, how could you do this to me!" he cried.

第二天一早，他被一艘正靠近小島的船隻的鳴笛聲所吵醒。
是的，有人來救他了。
Early the next day, however, he was awakened
by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island.
It had come to rescue him.

到了船上時，他問那些船員說：「你怎麼知道我在這裡？」
"How did you know I was here?"
asked the weary man of his rescuers.

「因為我們看到了信號般的濃煙。」他們回答說。
"We saw your smoke signal," they replied.

人在碰到困難時，很容易會沮喪。
不過，無論受到折磨或者痛苦，都不用因此失去信心，
因為神一直在我們心裡面做著奇妙的工作。
It is easy to get discouraged when things are going bad.
But we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives,
even in the midst of pain and suffering.

記著：當下一次你的小木屋著火時，
那可能只是神美妙恩典的表徵而已。
Remember, next time your little hut is burning to the ground
it just may be a smoke signal that summons the grace of God.

Although Michael Jackson's life has been a reflections of what the world is like, nonetheless, he was a great artist, a great humantarian giver, a great father to his children and he has contributed much to the shaping of the culture of America and the world by bridging races gaps. This year the Enrolment cum Anniversary Celebration Service was held at the church sanctuary followed by a Parade and Award at the Basel Hall. The event was graced by Bishop Rev Dr Thomas Tsen who came to deliver exhortation message to the congregation and also as the Guest of Honour during the Parade.

In his sharing from Psalm 98:1-6, Bishop encouraged us to declare our love to the Lord through new songs "Shout for joy, sing to the Lord a new song!". We experience God in many ways even through the Brigade ministry. Bishop shared that his daughters were in our company when they were girls. The best experience is our life is the salvation of the Lord through Christ.

May the Lord's name be glorified. We should build the foundation of our faith and life on Jesus and His love, this will enable us to love and live a life with firm foundation.

We are most thankful that all the GB companies in KK Group Council came and joined our service. Ms Lai Fui Nar -President, Ms Rowena Chua - Sabah Rep and Captain of 4th KK GB, Ms Angleai Loi - Captain of 5th KK GB Ms Irene Chiang -Captain of 1st Penampang and Ms Yen Pau Jin - WO of 1st KK GB were all present at the service. A Picnic and Two Weddings at Church

This was to be the one picnic that did not work out exactly as our senior boys and girls have planned it. For one thing, we were forced to change venue on the day itself due to bad weather. The sun refused to come out until 10 a.m. and we have arranged to meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Tanjung Aru Second Beach. So with 50 sms and few telephone exchanges, all the parents have been informed the venue has been changed to our usual meeting place, Basel Church Kota Kinabalu.

Then, this picnic went smoothly as planned with all the games, however we were surprised with one wedding ceremony just in front of our venue followed by another wedding towards the end of our picnic. This should be called "A picnic and two weddings at church".

Why GB Awards ?

An Award is an outward symbol showing that a goal has been reached.

The Girls’ Brigade Award work is divided into spiritual, physical, educational and social aspects resulting in a balanced program of activities. These help girls develop in body, mind and spirit increasing their awareness of others' needs.

Awards are given when a goal has been achieved. It is a form of encouragement to excel and go further in the training.

In this busy high-tech world, parents cannot expect the school text-books to teach everything about life. Life is surely much bigger than the school education system ! Much of life situations are not what is mentioned in the textbooks. The Girls' Brigade Award work prepares girls for womanhood in the future. Beside lady-like tasks like sewing, party-planning, we also teach on expedition, survival skills, map reading etc. It is equipping them for the 21st century living.

This is the story of the beginning of The Girls' Brigade Movement. It was started in 1893 in Northern Ireland. There are two other similar groups that began in England and Scotland. Later in 1963, these three sister organisations came together and join to be as one.

The number of year is to be changed from 1-3.

Young Leader Awards

When a girl reaches 15 years old, she becomes a pioneer but however before she could be promoted as a Young Leader, she needs to follow a YLPT (Young Leader Preliminary Training) training and followed by assessment in captain for at least 6 months. Young Leader promotion is not automatic but it has been earned through passing the exam in training and completing all practicals in the company.

A pioneer can still follows the Pioneer Venture Programme even if she is not promoted as Young Leader. She will still earn the Achievement Awards (Triangles) as well as Service Awards as pioneer. However, she will not be able to get the braids awards which will lead to the National Highest Award - The Pioneer Pin.

After the promotion, Young Leader will follow a series of training such as RALT (recreational and Administrative Leadership Training) and GBSL (Girls' Brigade Leadership Training) to get more braids in order to complete the full programme for Young Leader. In order to qualify for the Pioneer Pin Award, a Young Leader MUST complete the Pioneer Venture Programme, attend and pass all trainings of Young Leaders, complete all the works and practicals requirement and attend an interview.

The difference between the Pioneer Venture Programme (Triangle Awards) and the Young Leader Training Programme (Braids Awards) is not only that the Young Leader Training Programme may lead to Pioneer Pin Award. The Braid Awards achieved through the Young Leader Training Programme could be won by the girl when she becomes an officer in the future. Whereas the Triangle Awards are just like other Achievement Awards, it cannot be worn by an officer. Should a girl unable to complete the Pioneer Pin Award, she will still stand to gain from the Young Leader Trainings.

On 15 June 2008, the GB girls had a special time to think and work on something for their fathers, grandpas and uncles. As the whole world celebrates Fathers Day, we gave the girls a time to think of their relationship with their parents and to work on a project for their favourite parents.

Mr Chong came in to have a special sharing with the girls on Psalm 8. Mr Chong is none other than our Lt Yong Su Yee's husband and he shared some very deep thoughts about children and their relationships with their parents. He encouraged the girls to remember 3 As.

He encouraged the girls to think of the good things that the parents have done for them. They could repay this goodness by saying it or writing it down like a poem.

The Cadets and Juniors did a hand print project for their dad, they tried different colours for the different effects. The hand print poem is specially dedicated to parents to remind them that the children are still small but one day they will grow to be very tall.

The Seniors and Pioneers learnt to make Sushi and packed them for their dads. Some Sushi came out in triangular shapes. The girls had a fun time learning to spread ingredients and roll them up before cutting them. We were able to share this goodies with our company's father figures :-

All in all, the company girls had a meaningful time remembering what parents especially dads mean to us.

Handprint projects

Handprint project has been a fun and meaningful craft for the younger girls namely Cadets and Juniors. After completion, its a very meaningful gift to present to parents. The handprints remind both parents and girls that we are all fagile and small. We should treasure life as it is now because one day all these little hands will grow bigger and memory will fade just how small these fingers used to be.

This is the school base at SRJK Lok Yuk Likas, the Chinese Primary School. We started this school base in 2007 with 66 girls,this year we have 105 girls from Primary 3 to 6. The main teaching language is Chinese.

This is the School Base started by 2nd KK GB Coy and based in Sekolah Rendah Lok Yuk Likas. This school base was started in 2006 and today has 45 girls. Majority of the group are Kadazan-Dusun, Chinese, India and others. The main teaching languages are Malay and English.

Our Company girls had a fun time spreading the mini cakes with cream and decorating them in a special way for their mums. This year, for Mothers Day, the girls got to decor a cake for their mums. Although most materials were pre-prepared for them, they still have to fold the silver box, decor with their words to mum and then put in the specially decorated cake boxes.

The girls really took pride to decor the cakes to present to their mums. The only thing we missed is to see how their mums will look when receiving the cakes at home !

in her heart for her child.

Inspection By Guest of Honour and the Parade

We held our special Enrolment and Rededication Service on 27 April 2008 1pm at the church sanctuary, followed by a Parade, Awards and Fellowship time. The Church GB Group has a total of 45 girls (new and old) enrolled / rededicated in this service.

Our Chaplain Rev Lee Tak Vui conducted the special service.

The Seniors did a Band Combo for the songs "Hari Ini Ku Rasa Bahagia" and "As the Deer". The Cadets and Juniors recited with signing on Psalm 23 and sang the action song "I'm in the Lord's army".

After the service, the parade was formed and prizes were given for special awards. The Most Oustanding Girl Award 2007 was won by Young Leader Wendy Pang. While, Senior Pang Yong Huey and Senior Joyce Lo were given the Best Academics Awards for their excellent 7As in UPSR 2007 Exam.

We held our Easter Camp 20-21 March 2008 with a total of 35 girls. This was a good experience for the little ones as many were their first-night away from home ! On the morning of checking in and registration, many mums were wondering how their girls would do being the first time away from home! We fully understood their concern, we made it a bit of "Sleep-Over" experience with other girls.

We had a good time learning about the meaning of Good Friday and how we should celebrate Easter in a meaningful way. We had two sisters who came in to give Bible Study on Easter Messages, there were Sister Aisha and Sister Eleanor. Sister Aisha taught the Seniors and Pioneers while Sister Eleanor taught the Cadets and Juniors.

In this camp, the girls did a "Stained-glass-look" Cross. There were many beautiful artworks! We joined the chruch for the Good Friday Service and it was most challenging for the younger girls to stay concentrated. During the midnight before, they were all awoken up by the Seniors for a "Midnight Fire Drill", all woke up except two little ones who were unalarmed with all the shoutings and running ! Well, the Seniors made them wear jackets and did a midnight drill session with all of them! We could hear one cadet girl sobbing for her mum but she still continued the drill despite her tears ! It was quite an experience to do midnight drill because the leaders could see your mistakes but not your face !

All in all, the girls had a good time of learning and fellowshiping with one another.

Who should join GB ?

Girls between the age of 7-21 may join the company. We take in girls from as young as Kinder 2 (6 years old) if they are quite independent. Seniors girls normally come in when they in eralier forms like Form 1 or 2.

Girls who are very active can benefit from GB as they are quite ready to be trained as leaders.
Girls who are very shy and inactive by nature need GB training to bring them out to face the challenges of life.
Girls who are very friendly will make many friends in GB and friends for life !
Girls who dont easily make friend will benefit form the many friendship opportunity given to them!

In short, all girls can benefit from the programme of GB!

We usually have a recruitment campaigne from end of year to early part of year just before our enrolment service at the end of April, that is the best time to tr out. However, you can join any time of the year.

Christmas Camp 2007

Merry Christmas !

For the first time, our company ran a Christmas Camp this year ! We had a total of 22 girls, almost all of the entire company girls joined the camp! It was real fun for the first-timers as they stay overnight away from home. Our camp venue is the luxurious Kyrugma House, along Jalan Tuaran and opposite the Basel Church.

The Christmas camp held was held 3-4 December 2007. During the camp, Mr Joseph Wong, our Assistant Chaplain and his wife Mrs Cathrine Wong, our Warrant Officer took turn to share with the girls the meaning of Christmas, Christmas Decorations, Why Christ must come, How to celebrate Christmas with meaning.

The Christmas Craft time were nothing but fun :- we did christmas decor, circular patterns dye-your-cloth, special musical instrument. We also had a simple baking lesson on how to bake Scottish Shortbread, packed and put inside a silver box as a Christmas gift !

Aside the funtime, we had two sessions of drill taught by our senior girls. We also had a movie night with "Home Alone 2". The girls also watched the testimony of Lena Maria and saw how brave and her life is full of love despite her handicap.

All-in-all, we all had a wonderful pre-Christmas experience ! The cadets actually begged to stay longer in future camp.

2nd Kota Kinabalu Girls Brigade Company was established in 1978 within the Basel Church of Malaysia Kota Kinabalu congregration. The company was registered in 1979 officially. Since then, it has been training girls from all backgrounds, races and denominations to be a better person in their womanhood. The company has produced quite a number of Pionner Pins holders in the country, not to mention that these ladies were also the first to receive such highest national award in the state of Sabah.

We meet in Kota Kinabalu, the capital city of Sabah. The state of Sabah is one of the 13 states to form Malaysia. Situated in the Northern part of Borneon Island, the third largest island in the world, Sabah is fortunate to miss most of the typhoons paths across South China Sea, hence our name as "The Land Below the Wind".
